A recent Harvard Business Journal survey showed that among top executives, it’s believed that there are ten factors that inhibit digital transformation. I’ve categorized these ten factors into those related to business culture and those related to business structure.
Among the structural obstacles, legacy systems present one of the most significant challenges because if you change them, it can be difficult to predict what, if any, further changes will occur as a result.
A second obstacle to digital transformation is the inability to work between silos. This is a serious structural issue because if your teams can’t break out of their traditional job descriptions, learning how to bring about change in the workplace will be difficult.
Another issue I address is one of the most common when it comes to implementing a digital transformation. It’s the problem of having an organization that is too risk-averse. This poses a huge challenge to creating a digital transformation culture because if your employees are scared to try new things, making any kind of change will be slow.
If you really want to know how to bring about change in the workplace and how to create the required digital transformation culture to do so, it’s important to understand that the first step is creating a cultural shift within top management. Once top management is on board, the rest of the changes – both structural and cultural – will be much easier.
