BBCH Pediatric Specialty Care - JJ's Story

BBCH Pediatric Specialty Care - JJ's Story

- JJ’s complex medical situation requires that his care be managed by multiple pediatric specialists. Through BBCH’s team of experts at MMP Pediatric Specialty Care, JJ gets the coordinated care he needs and his mom Kelley, plays an active role as part of that team.
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
KELLY: Alright, here I come!
Whoa!
We're a Christian family
and definitely believe in providing homes
and love for kids in need.
Put your feet up.
So, foster care was a big part of our family.
I see you!
JJ just latched right onto us.
There's a lot of people
that will even say he looks a lot like us
You know, which is just funny.
Would you like me to suction?
Sure, we can do that.
JJ has bronchopulmonary dysplasia
which is chronic lung disease
from being born at 27 weeks.
His airway is about 75 percent swollen.
That's for your suction machine.
H-M-E's.
And trach ties.
Those are your G-tubes.
You look at his medical records
and it's hundreds of thousands of pages.
We have to think outside the box for him.
(Singing)
Maine Med has been able to put together
the pieces to the puzzle
that were missing.
The love that the nurses and doctors
have for him-
I mean, when he's in the hospital,
he has a crowd! (laughs)
DR COATES: I feel that JJ represents
what's best about Maine Medical Partners
Pediatric Specialty Care
and Barbara Bush Children's Hospital
because he really has required
a team around him.
We have been very committed
to understanding how we can best provide
that coordinated care.
KELLY: The outpatient care has been incredible.
What? You want me to move?
(laughs)
You can go to the aerodigestive clinic
and you get to see all 3 doctors
in one place, one appointment time.
And that has been amazing
for coordinating his care.
They're calling us,
they're checking in with us,
they have treated me as part of his team.
DR COATES: I think it's been very clear
to this family
that they receive top notch medical care
here within Maine
because of the quality of care,
the consistency of the care,
and the communication
among all the different providers.
KELLY: He's just made
leaps and bounds progress.
He wants to be able to swim under water
and do all the sports
that his siblings are doing.
Our goal is just that he can grow up
and be strong.
He's making a difference
to each person that meets him.
Whoa! (Laughs)
I know he's changed our perspective
and changed our lives for the better.
Want to run?
1, 2, 3... whoa!
(music)
