One of the great inventions in the history of music is the autonomy of instrumental music. How can pure instrumental music provide meaning? One of the answers is musical structure. Through the maxim "learning by doing" I asked the students to compose a musical work based on the variation form-structure. It could be a passacaglia, a chaconne or a theme with variations, and it could be made with traditional means or in a more modern sonic way.
The students making these works are sophomores at Edvard Munch videregående skole, a high school situated in Oslo, Norway.
