Sharples said he witnessed an employee "berating, insulting and humiliating" a young man who was there for his learner's or driver's licence. He said the employee shouted at the young man, telling him he was doing him a favour by speaking English. Sharples said the employee was heard saying "you white people need to learn your own language". "He then called him stupid at which time I stood up and asked LM (Mike) Boshomane to please put some love in his heart and show the young man a little bit of respect."
Sharples said he opened a case of crimen injuria and lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission and the Equality Court. The City of Ekurhuleni said in a statement that they were aware of the video, saying the matter is being taken "seriously" and an investigation has been instituted.
