Why does this area exist on a football pitch? - Oh My Goal

The laws of football have developed a lot since the sports official invention in 1863. Forward passing, the number of substitutes, what players wear: the regulations have greatly changed over the years.

The dimensions and the layout of the pitch are another aspect of the game which has evolved. The arc of a circle or “D” on the edge of the penalty area did not always exist. This video explains why it was invented.
