Why are there so many homeless people in Washington, DC?

As of 2016, the US capital had the highest per capita rate of homelessness in the country. With its sky-high rents, Washington DC is one of the least affordable places to live in the US. To afford a 2-bedroom apartment, a minimum-wage worker would have to work 104 hours a week.

Rania Khalek spoke with some of these DC residents who struggle hard to make ends meet about what it's like being homeless in the capital of the richest country on Earth. Turns out, it's not just about circumstances or misfortune. Often it's about local government policy, which attacks the community's most vulnerable.
