You know that a country has to be great when it attracts immigrants from all over the world.
But what makes America so great?
Well, the conventional answer is economic opportunity, and it's true. America provides a remarkable and abundant life for the ordinary guy.
I've got a friend of mine from India who has been trying to emigrate to America, he hasn't been able to, and when I finally asked him why, he says, "Well, I really want to move to a country, Dinesh, where the poor people are fat."
And that's the abundance of America.
But, for me, America has a second, related benefit. It's a place where you get to write the script of your own life. You're the architect of your own destiny.
In America, your destiny isn't given to you, it's constructed by you.
So to me, it's this concept of the self-directed life, of being, in a sense, in the driver's seat of your own future, that's makes America such a magnet for the world.
