Several Holy Cities in India Are Named Kashi - What Is the Significance of the Name? India is the land of many holy cities, several of them on the banks of holy river. One such holy city is Varanasi or Benares on the banks of river Ganga. This holy city is referred to as "Kashi" in the ancient scriptures. Kashi is prominently mentioned in the Mahabharata.
