Russia: Satisfactory living conditions restored for animals in ‘whale prison’

Russia’s General Prosecutor’s Office announced on Friday that satisfactory living conditions have been restored for the orca and beluga whales in what the media have dubbed the ‘whale prison’ in Nakhodka Bay in Russia’s Primorski Krai.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Ministry for the Protection of the Environment and Natural Resources on 22 February to resolve the case by 1 March to prevent further unnecessary suffering of the animals.

Russia's Investigative Committee initiated a criminal case over animal abuse after inspecting the enclosures where 90 beluga whales and 11 orcas were being kept. It is believed that the orcas were to be sold to China. Several belugas and orcas have already died in the enclosures. Eighty seven belugas and 10 orcas are believed currently to be in captivity there.

The authorities reportedly plan to release the mammals from the “whale prison.”
