There are many reasons to get a residential electrical permit. One reason is that when a contractor completes their work you will have verification that the work was inspected by a master electrician or Safety Codes Officer and approved by the municipality. Another reason is that when you go to sell your home an inspection will be required to make sure all the building permits are compliant with the NEC and that the electrical installation meets the Safety Codes Act and is approved by the municipality.

There are 3 levels of inspections after the electrical permit is issued when dealing with electrical installations in homes. The first is a “service” inspection that is required when you’re installing a mast and overhead line to be brought down to the main electrical panel.

After the “service” inspection is complete you can order a “rough-in” inspection. Before the “rough-in” inspection all the following items must be complete: all electrical boxes are mounted, all wiring has been installed, all grounding has been done, all fixtures are installed and recessed (except retrofit), wiring has been installed into main subpanel and all wiring has been isolated. This is typically the type of inspection you would be getting when you’re doing a basement renovation, a garage installation, a panel upgrade, or anything with exposed wiring needed to be looked at before the drywall has been put up.

After you have passed your “rough-in” inspection you can order a “final” inspection. Before the “final” inspection the following items must be completed: all devices are installed on the boxes (plugs, switches, lights, low voltage wiring, thermostats, data boxes, fire alarm, 240v outlets, furnace, plug plates, etc), there are no open or loose points along the walls or surfaces, items have been closed up, breakers have been energized and are working properly and all electrical has been verified by a master electrician or contractor.

Getting a permit or booking an inspection has to be done by a licenced master electrician and will be inspected by a Safety Codes Officer in the respective municipality prior to getting an approval report.
