Speaking to France24, Alain Lamassoure claimed he would be prepared to accept a request to delay Brexit made by the UK only under three circumstances. The French MEP called on Britain to solve the political deadlock in Westminster with a "major political initiative". Mr Lamassoure revealed the resignation of Theresa May from her Prime Minister position could allow the EU to come to more flexible terms for the withdrawal agreement. The former French European Affairs Minister added that should Theresa May continue to refuse to give up on her leadership, a general election should follow, but he admitted a Labour victory could not resolve the Brexit impasse. Finally, he claimed the decision should be put back before the British electorate for a final democratic say on the issue, despite recognising MPs would struggle to agree on the wording of a second referendum question.
