This place is hard to find, but it's worth it. You'll have to go about half a block east on 5th street, past Brazos. There are two poorly lit signs in front of a barber shop indicating (The Good Life) Bar Bar. Don't ask about the name, it's confusing. Locals call it The Bar Bar.
You'll walk down 2 flights of stairs to a room that's literally beneath the city and was once a "house of ill repute." Yes....this is the real deal. Go through a speakeasy black door and the first thing you'll notice is the freshness of the place. You can tell the floor needs a few beers spilled on it. The feel is laid back, and there's a brick wall from 1925. The bar issues fresh tubes of lipstick to those who want to leave their mark, and there are "kisses" left there by the clientele.
They have a back room they open on the weekends to accommodate larger crowds, and I have found the drinkers to be a bit of a mix. There are wealthy looking older guys at the bar, people in their their thirties and straight up co-eds.
The music is mainly blues, via Pandora, and there's a good selection of draft beer that is rotated weekly. They're not authorized to sell liquor, but you can bring a bottle of liquor for a flat fee of $10.00. They will not charge you anything more if you just use ice/water as a mixer.
The story on the "workaround" gets better. The place is literally right next to a liquor store. Tell them you're buying it for The Bar Bar and you get a discount, and if you want to keep your bottle of liquor there: You can rent a locker for twenty dollars a month (although these lockers are going fast).
Is this place worth checking out? Absolutely. They've pulled off a relatively upscale concept with an unpretentious atmosphere. Talk to the owner, Brian, who seems to be as constant as the bar itself. He's a laid back guy who tried to find a space to open a bar for years, and almost gave up...until he found it directly beneath where he gets his haircut.
