Wider rims give a wider footprint and better sidewall support. Better sidewall support means you can run tires a ta. lower pressure. Lower pressure equals a larger contact patch, which equals greater traction.
When the contact patch is not directly under the rim a burp is more likely to happen. Lower pressure also increases efficiency in most terrain.
